This designation is intended to raise understanding about the condition and the challenges faced by those of us living with it. This day provides an opportunity for Fibromyalgia Association Canada (FAC) and the entire fibromyalgia community to educate the public, share patient experiences, advocate for research, hold campaigns and promote support for those of us affected by fibromyalgia.

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic, invisible condition that affects an estimated 2 million Canadians and millions more worldwide. It is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties, sometimes referred to as “fibro fog.” Despite its prevalence, fibromyalgia is frequently misunderstood, because people tend to not believe in things they can’t see. Fibromyalgia is considered an “invisible illness”, because people living with it may appear healthy or fully functional, yet experience daily pain and fatigue that significantly impact their quality of life. This invisibility can lead to misunderstanding, stigma, and isolation, making awareness and education critical.

By learning about fibromyalgia, by listening to the voices of those affected, and by advocating for awareness, Fibromyalgia Association Canada (FAC) hopes to create a world where people living with fibromyalgia are recognized, supported, and never dismissed.

Across Canada and around the world, patients, caregivers, families, and communities mark May 12th with events, campaigns, and activities to highlight the realities of living with fibromyalgia. The goal is to foster empathy, understanding, and action, encouraging improvements in diagnosis, treatment, and support services.

By learning about fibromyalgia, listening to the voices of those affected, and advocating for awareness, we can help create a world where people living with fibromyalgia are recognized, supported, and never dismissed.

Did you know?

Fibromyalgia is one of the leading causes of disability related to chronic pain.
